Description

Enjoy your delicious Belgian Croustillons fresh from the fryer!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour (Can substitute with gluten-free flour)
  • 1 tablespoon Granulated Sugar (Swap with coconut sugar or honey for different flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon Salt (Essential for a well-rounded taste)
  • 2 teaspoons Active Dry Yeast (Fresh yeast can yield a slightly richer flavor)
  • 1 cup Lukewarm Milk (Non-dairy alternatives like almond or soy milk can be used)
  • 1 large Egg (Use a flax egg for a vegan option)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (Feel free to adjust the amount)
  • 4 tablespoons Melted Butter (Vegetable oil can be used as a dairy-free alternative)
  • 3 cups Vegetable Oil (Can use canola or peanut oil; avoid olive oil)
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar (Use sugar alternatives for a diabetic-friendly option)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in lukewarm milk, letting it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center, then pour in the yeast mixture, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix until the batter is smooth.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and place it in a warm area. Let the batter rise for about 45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. In a deep fryer or a heavy pot, heat vegetable oil to 180°C (350°F).
  5. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the dough into the hot oil, frying for about 3-4 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  6. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the Croustillons to a plate lined with paper towels. Dust them generously with powdered sugar while they are still warm.

Notes

  • Fresh yeast can yield a slightly richer flavor.
  • Vegetable oil can be used as a dairy-free alternative.
  • Avoid olive oil for frying.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of vanilla extract.
