Description

A delicious layered dessert combining apples, cinnamon, and phyllo pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 8 sheets phyllo pastry or lasagna sheets
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Apple Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and nutmeg. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Prepare the Phyllo Pastry: If using phyllo pastry, lay out a single sheet on a clean surface and brush lightly with melted butter. Layer another sheet on top and repeat until all sheets are used. If using lasagna sheets, cook according to package instructions until al dente.
  4. Layer the Dessert: In a baking dish (9×13 inches recommended), place a layer of the apple mixture. Add a layer of phyllo or lasagna sheets. Repeat the layering process, ending with a layer of apples on top.
  5. Add the Topping: Mix the brown sugar with the remaining melted butter and vanilla extract. Drizzle over the top layer of apples.
  6. Bake the Dessert: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the dessert to cool for at least 15 minutes. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • To enhance the flavor, you can add a splash of brandy or a sprinkle of chopped nuts between the layers.
  • If you prefer extra sweetness, drizzle some caramel sauce over the top before serving.
  • Ensure the phyllo pastry is well buttered to prevent it from drying out during baking.
